The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is known as New Zealand’s best one day walk, and each year, more than 100,000 people experience this spectacular trek. The Tongariro National Park is New Zealand’s oldest national park and a dual World Heritage area. This status recognizes the park’s important Maori culture and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.

Tongariro Lodge guides are highly qualified and knowledgable in respect to current track and weather conditions, the best scenic spots and recommending the very best experience for you. All guides have First Aid and safety qualifications.

Our Lodge is the ideal base to enjoy the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The start of the crossing is a short 30 minute scenic drive away.

The track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of the Tongariro National Park’s special gifts. A cold mountain spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald coloured lakes and magnificent views combine to make this a truly memorable experience.

This 7 to 8 hour day journey is a ‘must-experience’ while visiting New Zealand. Should the weather not be suitable for the crossing, alternative spectacular, one-day walks will be provided by our guide.
